Four-river veldt has a temperate climate. The rainy season lasts from late fall to early spring, with only occasional snows in deep winter. When the rains end there is a regular, sudden onset of torrid weather.
There are two cultures here—silver broadly on the eponymous veldt, and a syncretic city-state in the archipelago to the south.
Despite a troubled early history, the people of the southern archipelago found prosperity by developing mercantile interests in the populous veldt to the north. Today they invest heavily in expeditions to learn the secrets of the islands that surround their modest city home. Festivals and holidays of grand pomp are frequent here. Popular among these is the Feast of the Vagrant, celebrated by the devout with fasting and pilgrimage.
Silver settlements reach from one end of the veldt to the other, scraping hardy grains from the ground and herding goats since ancient times. Once merely the second city of the region, the eastern capital rose to prominence when the great southern delta was abandoned during a devastating plague. In the hard times since, enterprising ranchers have taken to hunting lion and buffalo. Some among them hope to reclaim the overgrown ruins—and treasures—of the old capital, while others aim to revitalize the fisheries that once thrived there.
